Why are more and more people using Kodi instead of VLC?

Kodi vs VLC. VLC vs Kodi. The streaming content application eats the toast of the typical video player. This is evident from the data from Google Trends, which has a downward trend for the player from 2014 to now. What does Kodi have that VLC doesn’t? Why does everyone choose the latter at the expense of VLC to watch series and movies? We see it below.

What is Kodi and what is Kodi not

Unlike VLC Player, Kodi doesn’t limit its functions to those of a basic media player. The application itself calls itself a multimedia center where you can play all content on demand , both from the Internet and via local video files. So far, the differences from VLC are minimal. The reason for being from Kodi has to do with Addons .

Interesting VLC data compared to Kodi in the past 5 years. Information from Google Trends.

We were able to define  related stuff as small Kodi add-ons that allow you to expand the catalog displayed by the application, as well as the services it integrates. From YouTube and Plex to Spotify , via international radio stations, TV channels from other countries and the very best: films and series on demand.

Like any on-demand service, Kodi account classifies its catalog as if it were an official streaming service. So, with the right tools and accessories, we can watch any movie, series or television channel from the comfort of the armchair without having to resort to questionable quality pages or intrusive advertising spaces.

Another advantage of the application over VLC is its compatibility with any operating system. Being open source software, the application supports its installation on Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, Blackberry OS and iOS computers , although its use is more popular on Raspberry OS based systems due to its compatibility with televisions.

It is also compatible with sending content via Google Chromecast , making it an idea if we want to broadcast images from mobile or tablet.

Install add-ons on Kodi from official repositories

The installation of an add- on in Kodi can be done in two ways: via official repositories or via external sources . In the former case, the process is as simple as going to the Addons tab from the main screen .

Once inside, we click on the box icon that we can find in the top bar on the left. Then the application will show a library of plug – ins by content type Addons  music, video, third – party applications … Even official applications such as Spotify and YouTube.

Once we have chosen the type of add-on we want to install, we select the add-on in question and click Install . It is automatically installed in the application and we can access it from the main screen.

How to install Addons on Kodi from a ZIP file

The big advantage of Kodi is that it supports the installation of add-ons from external sources, which we can find on many websites. The way to proceed in this case is slightly different from the previous one.

First we will have to go to the configuration of the application through the gear of the top bar shown to us on the main screen. Once inside , we go to the System section and finally to Addons .

Within this option we will check the Unknown sources box to activate the installation of add-ons from unofficial sources. To install an add-on from a ZIP file, we go back to the Kodi configuration and select the Addons section .

Finally, we will click on Install from a ZIP file and select the file in question to install the add-on, which will appear on the main page of the application as if it were an official add-on.

How to change the theme and look of Kodi

Kodi supports the installation of own and third-party themes through the application options. Within the same interface section, we click on Skin and then on the option of the same name . The application will then show us a list of predefined themes, as well as the option to add as many others as possible from external sources.

In case we want to change the colors, font or size of the interface , we can resort to the options shown in the same section of Skin. If we open the Screensaver section, we can choose an image to display when Kodi is on suspension.

Add RSS news to Kodi

As a good multimedia center, Kodi has news integration via the RSS standard. The respective option can be found in the same section of Skin in Interface .

Once inside we will activate the Activate RSS news box . Then we click on the Edit button that appears after activation and it will automatically download an add-on called RSS reader.

After this, we click on the Add button and add all the news sources that are of interest to us. These are displayed on the main Kodi screen, as in any RSS reader.

How to create user profiles on Kodi

If the application is intended for two or more people, the best way to distribute the content is to create user profiles. In the Kodi configuration we find a section with the same name. We just need to select Profiles and then Add Profile .

Finally, we will indicate the name and folder in the root of the storage, the folder in which all data related to the content will be stored ( add-ons , RSS feeds …).
